If you’re like me you often roll your eyes when someone tells you to set goals. So I set a goal to get a job. How does that help me get a job? It’s often easier to have a few small goals that help add up to “the big goal”.
You’ve probably heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals, that stands for: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time based. S.M.A.R.T. is actually a pretty good framework to make a goal when you get around all the big words, the way i look at it is i need to make a goal that is specific (no better way to say that), i will know when i’ve achieved it, its realistic, it helps work towards “the big goal”, and i will do it with in a certain time frame.
Using all this information, let ‘s say my “big goal” is to get a job. What things do I need to do to work toward getting a job? Some might be, do I have a resume? Have I found references? Have I practiced going to an interview? Those could all be small goals to work towards my big goal. It can be easy to get stuck in inaction when faced with all these things I need to do to work towards my goal. That’s where the S.M.A.R.T. For example, I need to make a resume. My goal would be to work on my resume for half an hour each day until it’s done.
It can be frustrating to have so many things to do to work towards your “big goal”, start anywhere and reach out for support if you need it.
